Austin Community College said it and a Maryland-based non-profit will launch a partnership Monday aiming to train more nurses to fill a gap in health care in Central Texas.
According to the ACC announcement, the partnership between the college and Dwyer Workforce Development will begin with the school’s certified nurse aide (CNA) program.
A pilot program at Austin Community College is aiming to help parents in marginalized communities go to college and grow their careers.
The pilot program is a partnership between ACC and nonprofit AVANCE-Austin, which helps low-income families, predominately Latino, and Workforce Solutions Capital Area.
A nonprofit that is establishing roots in Austin will support 100 nontraditional students in their journey to become certified nurses at no tuition cost through a new partnership with Austin Community College.
The two entities are being supported by Workforce Solutions Capital Area, which mediated the agreement and is financially backing the new program, with direct support for eligible program participants, including child care services.
Workforce Solutions Capital Area and Workforce Solutions Rural Capital Area are partnering with major hospital groups and local clinics to provide on the job training and support classroom learning for Austin teens graduating high school.
Anyone over the age of 18 is eligible to apply for a health care apprenticeship; however, applicants must have a high school diploma or general education development certificate in order to sit for the certification exam at the end of the apprenticeship training.
Child care in Central Texas can be hard to find – and affordable child care is even harder to locate. But United Way of Greater Austin is helping connect people to resources they can afford.
United Way is a nonprofit that has a community-wide coalition that networks to find high-quality child care, as well as resources to afford it. This network is something that has had a major impact on local providers and local families.
The nonprofit has its Connect ATX call line that helps parents navigate resources like the Workforce Solutions child care program, federally-funded head-start programs through Child Inc., public schools and Pre-K programs.
Workforce Solutions Capital Area and UA Local 286 Plumbers & Pipefitters are holding an open house event this Saturday to promote their local pre-apprenticeship class and encourage residents to pursue a career in a trade.
The Multi-Craft Core Curriculum Pre-Apprenticeship Program (MC3) is a two-week course that guides participants through a range of skills across the trades, first aid and safety, and OSHA certification.
The Central Texas Food Bank and Workforce Solutions Capital Area are partnering for an event Thursday to help those in need get food and job placement assistance ahead of the holidays.
The “Fed Today, Work Tomorrow” event will be held at Workforce Solutions Capital Area on the Austin Community College Eastview campus from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday. There will be free meals for the first 100 people, and SNAP enrollment coordinators will be on site to help people get signed up.
Veronica Ramirez is a board member for Workforce Solutions Capitol Area. She says barriers like injuries, mental health challenges, and other hardships often make the job search a hard task for veterans.
“I think one of the biggest things is trying to transfer your military experience to civilian life,” said Ramirez.
Ramirez advises vets to start reaching out to their local workforce community if they are looking for employment.
Dedicated Workforce Solutions Capital Area career counselors will have a permanent home at Austin Community College District’s (ACC) Northridge Campus. The move is part of a new co-location formed in order to connect students more seamlessly to city and county funding for workforce training.
Why it matters: Data shows that ACC students who receive funding for career training through community-based partners such as Workforce Solutions Capital Area are 1.7 times more likely to complete their education faster than those who do not receive support.

What’s next: As the partnership grows, more certifications will be added, with the goal to co-locate continuing education staff at additional ACC campuses.
Am I eligible? Travis County residents are eligible for no-cost continuing education training if they are 18 years old, live in Austin-Travis County, are authorized to work in the U.S. and have been impacted by COVID-19.
With more than $500,000 in grants in hand, Workforce Solutions Capital Area is looking to expand apprenticeship programs in the area.
On Tuesday, Sept. 13, Workforce Solutions will be holding an event to let the public know about apprenticeship grant opportunities aimed at helping Travis County residents earn more through job training and certification.
