    Austin Community College to offer free job training to some unhoused individuals

     

    Around two dozen people experiencing homelessness will soon have the opportunity to become certified in heating and air conditioning maintenance through free training offered by Austin Community College (ACC).

    The training is the result of a partnership between ACC and Urban Alchemy, the nonprofit that manages the ARCH and 8th Street shelters. Twenty-five people living at those shelters will be able to participate in the HVAC training program.

    According to Urban Alchemy, two representatives for ACC approached the ARCH eight months ago to start the program. After much collaboration between the shelter, Workforce Solutions and ACC, the free program is expected to launch this month.

    Pflugerville Public Library launches new online platform for skilled trades industry

     

    There are thousands of jobs in fields like construction, transportation and utilities that need to be filled in Central Texas.

    Pflugerville Public Library hopes to chip away at that number through its new online platform called Blue Career.

    According to Workforce Solutions Capital Area, this area will need about 10,000 more workers annually to deliver on various projects in the works.

    At Esperanza, ACC will provide crucial step out of homelessness: Job training

     

    Not far from the trucks rumbling down U.S. 183, in front of the tidy rows of colorful cabins that provide shelter for the present, a tall blue building at the gateway to the Esperanza Community stands for something else.

    The future.

    Next month, the first 30 students will file into this building, all Esperanza residents eager to learn well-paying trade skills that will be their path out of homelessness. Half will pursue certification as heating, ventilation and air conditioning, or HVAC, technicians. The other half will pursue certification as auto mechanics.

    US Conference of Mayors Supports Local Workforce Development Efforts and the Austin Infrastructure Academy

    The United States Conference of Mayors passed a resolution supporting the implementation of workforce development programs for infrastructure projects in cities and towns across the country similar to the Austin Infrastructure Academy. It further resolves that these programs shall serve as a training hub contributing to community-based and union-based training programs designed to support real-time needs identified by both job creators and job seekers.

    Ten Austin-area high school students went through an seven-week summer internship with the Austin Transit Partnership.

    It was a chance to teach the students about careers in transportation engineering and planning.

    The Austin area is filled with multiple billion-dollar infrastructure projects in the pipeline.

    “We’re going to need about 10,000 more workers annually forecasting after 2040, if we’re going to deliver on the promise of these projects,” said Workforce Solutions Capital Area Director of Mobility Industry Partnerships Sarah Garza.

    Design underway for Austin Infrastructure Academy following $225K in contributions

    Nearly four months after city officials announced a central hub to train and support $25 billion in capital projects through the Austin Infrastructure Academy, Workforce Solutions Capital Area announced $225,000 in contributions to the facility’s design.

    WSCA officials announced June 26 that Texas Mutual Insurance Company and Google.org contributed $125,000 and $100,000, respectively, for design.

    “We extend our deepest gratitude to Texas Mutual and Google for contributing to the creation of this one-of-a-kind academy for our community that will equip our workforce with the skills and education needed to secure quality careers in mobility and infrastructure,” WSCA CEO Tamara Atkinson said in a news release. “Austin’s infrastructure workforce employs over 222,000 residents and is expected to grow by more than 80% by 2040, so the academy is a critical component to help prepare the current and future infrastructure workforce to meet this high demand.”

    The financial contributions made by large local employers Texas Mutual, which provides workers’ compensation insurance and is headquartered in Austin, and Google.org, which has several Austin-area offices employing local staff, will fund the creation of a strategic plan for the Academy, establish the budget forecast for the first five years, support the organizational capacity of Workforce Solutions Capital Area to serve as the hub and administrator of the Academy, and will develop the first two years of the Academy’s operation plan. Additionally, the funding will support the capacity to hire the initial Academy program staff.

    On March 7, 2024, the Austin City Council passed a resolution, brought forth by Austin Mayor Kirk Watson, to approve the establishment of a program to fund and support workforce development by launching the Academy. Since then, Austin Community College has announced its contribution to the creation of a physical location for the Academy at its Southeast Travis County campus.

    Workforce leaders talk how to grow skilled trades pipeline to 10,000+ workers annually

     

    During the most recent Urban Land Institute Austin session, Tamara Atkinson and other leaders in workforce training shared the realities of the local economy, which will need more than 10,000 new skilled workers every year for roughly a decade. Those workers will help to carry out construction and production on major projects such as the Interstate 35 reconstruction, the Project Connect mass transit system, the expansion of Austin-Bergstrom International Airport and the assorted semiconductor manufacturing plants across the region that collectively represent tens of billions of dollars in investment.

    Several times, talk turned to the city’s recent establishment of a new infrastructure training academy, which is intended to address the growing need for construction workers throughout the area.

    Panelist Nestor Ho, chief legal officer of Silicon Labs, said the current employment imbalance shows there are 62,000 jobs available for 52,000 people who are classified as unemployed.
