Raising Travis County is hosting its first in‑person Community Town Hall!

Travis County voters approved a property tax increase in 2024 to raise $75 million a year for child care. So far, $51.7 million has been committed, strategic adviser Leah Meunier said.
Now, the county is working to ensure there are enough teachers to fill the classrooms the money is meant to open.
The county is exploring a required minimum wage for teachers, and an Aug. 8 resource fair will connect families to care in the meantime.
Legacy Kids Academy is a child care provider in Pflugerville participating in the Raising Travis County initiative, a partnership between Workforce Solutions Capital Area and Travis County that helps eligible families access child care assistance. Legacy Kids Academy cares for 30 children receiving care through Child Care Services, and 5 receive Raising Travis County scholarships.
“The increased funding from Travis County has made a real difference in the lives of the children and families we serve. Because of this investment, we were able to improve the quality of our programs, purchase essential materials, and provide stronger support services to families who need them most,” said the center’s director.
“We have seen children become more engaged, confident, and supported, while families feel more connected to resources and opportunities in their community. This funding has helped create safer, more enriching environments where children can learn, grow, and thrive,” she said.
Raising Travis County creates positive impact beyond Legacy Kids Academy and Pflugerville, according to the director:

We currently have 445 children receiving care through Raising Travis County, and the initiative has awarded $3.8 million in gap payments to providers, helping them cover the true cost of quality care.

Travis County is working with Workforce Solutions Capital Area, the nonprofit that also manages the state’s affordable childcare list, to connect families with Raising Travis County scholarships.
Marjorie Vese Villafranco, a family services manager for Workforce Solutions, said the funding is coming at a crucial time for new parents.
Travis County Commissioners on Tuesday approved millions in contracts that they said would expand childcare access in the county, with a particular focus on after-school and summer programs, as part of a funding initiative voters approved in 2024.
The contracts with more than a dozen local nonprofits — including United Way for Greater Austin, Austin Sunshine Camps, Latinitas and the Greater Austin YMCA — collectively represent a $17.65 million investment in childcare across the county.
Travis County commissioners voted Tuesday on more than $17 million in new contracts aimed at expanding childcare, after‑school programs and summer opportunities for families across the county.
The $17.65 million investment fund contracts with 13 community partners through the Raising Travis County initiative, which was approved by voters to increase access to affordable, high‑quality childcare and out‑of‑school time programs.
Child care scholarships, after-school care and other efforts are underway to grow a voter-approved initiative to provide more affordable child care for low-income families in Travis County.
In 2024, voters approved increasing the county’s tax rate to generate $75 million for Raising Travis County. So far, the county has awarded more than $28 million to the Workforce Solutions Capital Area nonprofit as well as local school districts and other community organizations.
Travis County is looking to provide guaranteed child care availability for low-income families and expand child care options for families working during nontraditional hours.
The $75 million Raising Travis County initiative—approved by voters in November 2024—is expected to support several programs aimed at increasing affordable child care for around 9,800 children, according to previous Community Impact reporting. The county has awarded nearly $29 million in annual funding to the Workforce Solutions Capital Area nonprofit, local school districts and other community organizations, according to county documents.
County commissioners have taken their biggest step yet towards getting families tangible access to child care following a voter-approved tax increase to fund sweeping investment in that sector last November. Of the $75 million approved last year, the county has awarded $21 million in two contracts with Workforce Solutions Capital Area to provide direct scholarships to families and gap funding to prop up inadequately state-subsidized providers.
