If you’re a grandparent, aunt, uncle, or sibling (age 18 or older and living outside the child’s home), you may qualify to become a relative care provider for families receiving child care scholarships in Travis County, Texas.

  • Proof of relationship is required (e.g., birth certificates or marriage licenses)
  • Must be the child’s grandparent, great-grandparent, aunt, uncle, or sibling (18+ and not living in the child’s home)

Home & Residency Requirements

Care can be provided in the relative’s home. You must list your home with DFPS, which includes:

  • A $20 fee
  • A carbon monoxide detector
  • Background checks for household members age 14+

Care can be provided in the child’s home only if the below requirement(s) are met:

  • Relative care providers shall not reside in the same household as the eligible child unless:
    • The eligible child is a child of a teen parent or
    • The parent provides documents that other child care provider arrangements are not reasonably available.
  • Factors used to determine the reasonable availability of child care include:
    • The parent’s work schedule,
    • The availability of adequate transportation, or
    • The age of the child.
