Relative care
If you’re a grandparent, aunt, uncle, or sibling (age 18 or older and living outside the child’s home), you may qualify to become a relative care provider for families receiving child care scholarships in Travis County, Texas.

Who Can Apply
- Proof of relationship is required (e.g., birth certificates or marriage licenses)
- Must be the child’s grandparent, great-grandparent, aunt, uncle, or sibling (18+ and not living in the child’s home)
Home & Residency Requirements
Care can be provided in the relative’s home. You must list your home with DFPS, which includes:
- A $20 fee
- A carbon monoxide detector
- Background checks for household members age 14+
Care can be provided in the child’s home only if the below requirement(s) are met:
- Relative care providers shall not reside in the same household as the eligible child unless:
- The eligible child is a child of a teen parent or
- The parent provides documents that other child care provider arrangements are not reasonably available.
- Factors used to determine the reasonable availability of child care include:
- The parent’s work schedule,
- The availability of adequate transportation, or
- The age of the child.
