    City of Pflugerville proposes plans for community development federal funding, seeking community input

    Pflugerville City Council received an update June 25 regarding the five-year strategic plan being developed to secure Community Development Block Grant, or CDBG, funding for fiscal year 2024-25. Council members also opened the first of two public hearings to receive community input.

    Annually, the city of Pflugerville receives grant funding from the Department of Housing and Urban Development, or HUD. The money is intended to support affordable housing, suitable living environments—including infrastructure—and expand economic opportunities, according to city documents.

    Design underway for Austin Infrastructure Academy following $225K in contributions

    Nearly four months after city officials announced a central hub to train and support $25 billion in capital projects through the Austin Infrastructure Academy, Workforce Solutions Capital Area announced $225,000 in contributions to the facility’s design.

    WSCA officials announced June 26 that Texas Mutual Insurance Company and Google.org contributed $125,000 and $100,000, respectively, for design.

    “We extend our deepest gratitude to Texas Mutual and Google for contributing to the creation of this one-of-a-kind academy for our community that will equip our workforce with the skills and education needed to secure quality careers in mobility and infrastructure,” WSCA CEO Tamara Atkinson said in a news release. “Austin’s infrastructure workforce employs over 222,000 residents and is expected to grow by more than 80% by 2040, so the academy is a critical component to help prepare the current and future infrastructure workforce to meet this high demand.”

The paid externship program allows educators to visit companies in Central Texas where they can gain insight into both the technical and essential skills required in an ever-changing workplace.

    Austin Infrastructure Academy secures funding to begin design phase

    Workforce Solutions Capital Area announced that Texas Mutual Insurance Company and Google.org have made significant contributions to support the design of the Austin Infrastructure Academy.

    The contributions, $125,000 from Texas Mutual and $100,000 from Google.org, will fund the program design that will guide strategic direction for the Academy to meet its goal of connecting more local job seekers to career pathways in construction and operations.

    The Academy will serve as a central hub that will integrate recruitment, comprehensive and unified training, and wraparound service support for job seekers in Austin’s growing mobility and infrastructure industry.

    Prior to joining St. Edward’s University, Donna Beuk, EdD, MSN, RN, founding director of nursing, professor of nursing, St. Edward’s University, served as founding dean of the College of Health Science & Human Performance at University of Texas Permian Basin. She held appointments as academic chair of the School of Nursing at Husson University, and dean of Education/BSN director at Pacific College. Beuk held faculty positions at the University of Mobile and Auburn University after spending 12 years as a practicing nurse with experience in varied settings including hospitals, clinics and facilities serving veterans and critical care patients.

    IT Business Consultant at Workforce Solutions Capital Area Katherine Cariño said the industry is not hiring as much at the moment.

    “It’s definitely really tight right now for the tech industry. We’re seeing much more limited opportunities available with job postings and employers,” Cariño said. “Basically, it seems like they’re leaning out and trying to do more with less.”

    • An additional 4,000 will be needed in the next 10 years

    City of Pflugerville funds workforce training for residents

    In partnership with Workforce Solutions Capital Area, the city of Pflugerville is providing funding to support tuition-free job training through the end of the year for up to 20 eligible residents.

    The initiative is being funded by the city’s Community Development Block Grant, a federal grant the city receives annually. The money is intended to support affordable housing and suitable living environments as well as expand economic opportunities, according to city documents.

    Through the workforce training program, individuals will receive tailored training “to equip them with the necessary skills for in-demand occupations in industries quickly growing in Pflugerville, such as advanced manufacturing,” the release said.
